The City of Indian Wells has a comprehensive plan to respond to emergencies. In the event of a power outage, here are a few important safety tips

• Stay informed: Keep a battery-powered radio, flashlight or mobile device on hand to receive emergency updates.

• Sign up for Power Outage Alerts from Southern California Edison (SCE)
• Text 92210 to 888777 for Emergency Alerts from the City via Nixle. Watch this video for a step-by-step on how to sign up.  

• Stay away from downed power lines: If you encounter a downed power line, keep a safe distance and immediately call 911.
• Plan for medical needs: If you rely on medical equipment that requires electricity, contact SCE to take part in their Critical Care Backup Battery Program.
• Gather light sources: If you need light, use flashlights or battery-powered lanterns instead of candles to avoid fire hazards.
• Preserve food: Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed to maintain the cold temperature.
• Use generators safely: If you use a portable generator, make sure it’s outside in a well-ventilated area to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
• Unplug appliances: Unplug sensitive electronics and appliances to prevent damage from power surges when the power is restored.
