Safer at Home Executive Order
On March 19, 2020 the State of California issued an Executive Order ordering all individuals living in the State of California to stay home or at their place of residence except as needed to maintain continuity of operation of the federal critical infrastructure sectors. City Closures and Essential Services
Effective immediately, the City of Indian Wells is closed to the public until April 30. Staff is still available via website, email, or phone. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to balance the importance of the services we offer with the health and safety of all who visit and work at City Hall. We have many City services that are available online and staff is ready to assist. The links below provide additional information about these services for your convenience.
City Clerk Services
The Council and City staff are asking all our residents and visitors to take the necessary precautions to stay healthy and safe.
Essential City services include:
- Police and Fire
- Water, sewer and trash
- Maintenance of streets, trees and parts and infrastructure repairs
- Limited administrative services
It is more essential than ever that we protect and help support our seniors. The City recommends that seniors stay active, healthy and connected through eating well and exercising at home. To assist with these needs, the following programs are still available for the time being:
- Penny’s Pantry
- Meals on Wheels delivery
- Individual counseling appointments through the Wellness Center (in person or by telephone)

Residents are encouraged to continue to support local businesses by ordering takeout or delivery when available. Many local eateries, including the VUE are offering to-go and delivery orders. Grocery stores and pharmacies will continue to operate and hold special hours for those over 65 (we've listed the stores and hours at the top of this page). There is no shortage of food or interruption to local food supply.
Additionally, we ask that you please consider carefully what your actual need for food and sanitation supplies would be, for up to a two-week period, and purchase only the amount you would reasonably expect to use. Panic buying, hoarding and similar behaviors impact your fellow residents and complicate the current situation for others.
The Indian Wells Golf Resort is closed, however, the VUE continues to offer curbside grocery pickup, to-go menu and "take and bake" food options.

The City of Indian Wells is a part of the Desert Sands Unified School district, which has closed through April 30 to mitigate the spread of coronavirus. You can learn more about DSUSD closures and resources on the school district website.
The Riverside County Department of Animal Services is still working to protect human and animal health during the COVID-19 crisis.

Coachella Valley Mask Makers
The City just donated 90 N95 masks and 800 pairs of gloves to Eisenhower.
Coachella Valley Mask Makers has been working out of the Indian Wells Golf Resort making vital masks for our medical professionals with over 2,400 masks being made.
Local Business Assistance
Various assistance programs are already available or being developed to aid those impacted by the COVID-19 emergency. Additionally, new Federal legislation this week is expected to include significant assistance for individuals and various business sectors, including the tourism industry, and various loans and grants are anticipated. The City will continue to monitor these opportunities, and share pertinent information with the Indian Wells community as it becomes available.
Among the assistance available:
- The City of Indian Wells has adopted a moratorium on evictions for those tenants who can demonstrate an inability to pay rent as a result of a substantial decrease in household or business income, or substantial out-of-pocket medical expenses, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic or any government response to COVID-19. - On March 18, 2020, the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) implemented an immediate halt to foreclosures (and related evictions arising from those foreclosures) for single family homes that had Federal Housing Administration (FHA) insured mortgages for the next 60 days. - The Small Business Administration (SBA) is offering low-interest federal disaster loans for working capital to California small businesses suffering substantial economic injury as a result of COVID-19. Applicants may apply online, receive additional disaster assistance information and download applications at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/ . Applicants may also call SBA’s Customer Service Center at (800) 659-2955 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information on SBA disaster assistance.
- Local employees displaced due to the impact of COVID-19 may be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits, disability insurance, and/or paid family leave through the California Employment Development Department. - Numerous California banks and mortgage companies are offering grace periods, relief from late fees and other charges, and limiting foreclosure actions. - The Internal Revenue Service and California Franchise Tax Board have both extended the tax filing and payment deadline to July 15. - The Riverside County Tax Collector has announced that late payment penalties will be waived for qualifying residential and business properties if property taxes are paid before June 30. To learn if you qualify, and other details, please call the Riverside Tax Collector's office at (951) 955-3900.
Chamber of Commerce Assistance
Do you have questions about work or business-related challenges you may be facing such as unemployment, insurance, business assistance or loans? The Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce is expanding its Visitor Center operations in this time of need to assist our community, answer general questions and direct the community to resources available to them during this state emergency.
There is no charge associated with this community service, they are provided in partnership with the City of Indian Wells.

How many cases of COVID-19 are in California?
How it spreads:
- This virus was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. The first infections were linked to a live animal market, but the virus is now spreading from person-to-person.
- The virus that causes COVID-19 seems to be spreading easily and sustainably in the community (“community spread”) in some affected geographic areas.
- Community spread means people have been infected with the virus in an area, including some who are not sure how or where they became infected.
Can someone who has had COVID-19 spread the illness to others?
- Someone who is actively sick with COVID-19 can spread the illness to others.
- CDC recommends that patients be isolated either in the hospital or at home (depending on how sick they are) until they are better and no longer pose a risk of infecting others.

How can I help protect myself?
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Stay away from work, school or other if you are sick

Does CDC recommend the use of face mask to prevent COVID-19?
- CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a face mask to protect themselves from respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19.
- Only wear a mask if a healthcare professional recommends it. A face mask should be used by people who have COVID-19 and are showing symptoms.
- The use of face masks also is crucial for health workers and other people who are taking care of someone infected with COVID-19 in close settings (at home or in a healthcare facility).
What are the symptoms and complications that COVID-19 can cause?
- Symptoms reported for patients with COVID-19 include mild to severe respiratory illness with fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.

Should I be tested for COVID-19?
- Call your healthcare professional if you feel sick with fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, and have been in close contact with a person known to have COVID-19, or if you live in or have recently traveled from an area with ongoing spread of COVID-19.
- Your healthcare professional will work with your local and state public health department and the CDC to determine if you need to be tested for COVID-19.
